Thinking Liberty 9-29-09

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The archive for this week’s Thinking Liberty is now online. I’m very happy with this show despite the technical difficulties. Topics include G20 resistance, New Hampshire marijuana smoke-ins, Ron Paul, the Bolsheviks and authoritarian takeover of social revolution, Ludwig von Mises, and Bring a Gun to School Day.

Northeast Anarchist Studies Network Conference

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

When: November 21st and 22nd, 2009

Where: Hartford, Connecticut USA: at Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Ave.)

We are pleased to announce the beginning of the North American Anarchist Studies Network (NAASN). We see this as a space to develop theoretical and empirical work that pays critical attention to anarchism and items of interest to the anarchist milieu. Likewise, we see the creation of this network as a way for North American anarchists who do scholarly work to be able to support each other in our endeavors and create a space for critical dialogue and reflection.

This conference, then, is not only a place for us to discuss our research, dialogue with one another in panels, and educate ourselves through presentations. It is also a place for discussing the development and future course of the NAASN–so if you would like to be involved, please do so! As well, this provides us with a venue for discussing the role of the theoretician and the researcher in the larger project of dismantling capitalism, the state, and domination in all of its forms.

We are calling for papers, panels, and presentations to be given at the founding conference. Creativity in format and presentation is encouraged, as are submissions from people who may not currently have a university affiliation. As anarchists, we want to disrupt rather than perpetuate the lines drawn between the official academy and the production of knowledge. Papers, panels, and presentations should focus on work on anarchism or topics of interest to the anarchist milieu. Importantly, we see this as an occasion for dialoguing with one another to learn and grow, and would like to avoid sectarianism, personal attacks, and debating-to-win…[read more]

It’s Not A Drug War Unless Drugs Fight Back

Monday, September 28th, 2009

In Indiana, a woman was arrested for buying two boxes of cold medication in less than a week. Government cares for your health by preventing you from buying effective medicine.

Speaking of beneficial drugs, Keene, NH activists have staged a series of marijuana smoke-ins at the town central square. Will your town be next?

Facebook Adfail

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

I spend a bit of time on Facebook. It is actually worth looking at the ads for the oddities that sometimes appear.

The Running Man

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

I watched The Running Man again recently. Though the appearance is sometimes flagrantly 80s and a few plot devices are disappointing, this is a great action film with social commentary perhaps more relevant today than when it was made.

Now Online: Thinking Liberty 9-15-09

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The third recording of Thinking Liberty is now online. The recordings weren’t timed precisely, so the show starts about five minutes into the archive and runs a few minutes into Armegeddon. But just about everything is covered in the first link, so you don’t really need to download both podcasts unless you want to hear what the Bible says about the New World Order.

I’m new at this radio thing, but I think this show went really well. The entire show is done from one page of notes and whatever we think of. This time it was me and bile.

Topics include: libertyactivism.info (which will soon have the booklet version of ALLiance 3), The 9/12 March and what to do about it, Obama’s death squad in Somalia, and anarchist alternatives to police and military. I joked about the Center for a Stateless Society giving me money to plug them, but in reality I really like the organization and want to see it grow large enough to be able to do paid radio spots.

Armor and Infantry Gear

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

I thought I’d share some neat stuff I found while doing research for my next book, Trade War.

That’s a Russian VSSK 12.7mm silent sniper rifle.

This .pdf document studies the U.S. infantry combat load.

BulletProofME contains a wealth of information on soft and hard body armor.

I also found a couple of amateur tests of various bullets against some kind of steel: rifle and pistol.

And that reminded me of the lock shooting test.

ALLiance Issue 3 Now Online

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

The latest issue of ALLiance: A Journal of Theory and Strategy can now be viewed at Scribd and Liberty Activism. I just read it beginning-to-end and I’m very impressed.

This issue of ALLiance includes an essay by me, “Don’t Tell Me, Show Me: A Quick Look at Insurgent Political Influence”.
