Practical Progressives in History
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
Not only was Woodrow Wilson a lying imperialist who ordered thousands of people to their deaths, ramped up nationalist repression, and introduced widespread economic controls for a war to strengthen US political leadership in the world, he also was a driving force behind racial segregation.
When Monroe Trotter confronted Wilson on segregation, he was told,
The white people of the country, as well as I, wish to see the colored people progress, and admire the progress they have already made, and want to see them continue along independent lines. There is, however, a great prejudice against colored people. . . . It will take one hundred years to eradicate this prejudice, and we must deal with it as practical men. Segregation is not humiliating, but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen.
Now it just wouldn’t be practical to dismantle the US empire and prosecute those responsible for torturing people to death. No, practicality requires obsessing over the God-King’s celebrity status, ignoring or assisting the expansion of government power, and co-opting or ridiculing opponents when you aren’t drooling about sending them to the firing squads. But don’t listen to me, I’m a racist for bringing this up and I might lose my job if I don’t apologize for calling a Democrat a war criminal.
