Practical Progressives in History

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Not only was Woodrow Wilson a lying imperialist who ordered thousands of people to their deaths, ramped up nationalist repression, and introduced widespread economic controls for a war to strengthen US political leadership in the world, he also was a driving force behind racial segregation.

When Monroe Trotter confronted Wilson on segregation, he was told,

The white people of the country, as well as I, wish to see the colored people progress, and admire the progress they have already made, and want to see them continue along independent lines. There is, however, a great prejudice against colored people. . . . It will take one hundred years to eradicate this prejudice, and we must deal with it as practical men. Segregation is not humiliating, but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen.

Now it just wouldn’t be practical to dismantle the US empire and prosecute those responsible for torturing people to death. No, practicality requires obsessing over the God-King’s celebrity status, ignoring or assisting the expansion of government power, and co-opting or ridiculing opponents when you aren’t drooling about sending them to the firing squads. But don’t listen to me, I’m a racist for bringing this up and I might lose my job if I don’t apologize for calling a Democrat a war criminal.

A New Week Has Begun

…and on this blog weeks usually begin with metal.

If you like folk metal at all, Korpiklaani live is something you should experience. Some other good bands joined them at Paganfest, including

Moonsorrow

and the thrashin’ pirates from New Jersey, Swashbuckle.

Government: “Stop Sharing Food!”

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Chris Lempa tipped me off to the latest government action against Food Not Bombs:

Today, Friday, May 8, 2009, Food Not Bombs Albuquerque was notified that we are facing an injunction in court to stop sharing food anywhere that the state of New Mexico requires a permit.

I’m sure those nice government people just want to protect everyone from the dangers of unapproved food. There’s nothing at all evil about wanting to control the food supply, or wanting the poor to be more dependent on the state.

Trade War News

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

After I had about 100 pages written for Trade War, I decided it was about time I made actual outlines of the story and characters. This will hopefully make it easier to post rough excerpts that won’t be full of information contradicted in later pages. It should also help me create deeper characters than those in the intentionally vague Bring a Gun to School Day.

The first Trade War excerpt will be posted at tradewarbook.com on May 15, and yes, I will link to it from this blog.

Though the plot of Trade War usually advances in the most destructive way possible, it won’t be just violence contextualized with lame shallow morals of the type found in a typical action series. Consider yourself warned.

Konkin Was Right Again – The Libertarian Party Must Die.

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Not contented at merely being bought by Bob Barr’s team of scammers or promoting authoritarian positions, including the endorsement of candidates who favor “national language” legislation, the “Libertarian” Party’s National Committee recently said the following (from the real libertarians at TLE):

The government should use its rightful authority over the border to control entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a threat to our health by spreading the [H1N1] virus into areas where it does not exist.

In other words, one of the primary organizations expected to represent free-market libertarianism in America has officially bought into the fake pandemic program, which is obviously designed to frighten people into accepting “quarantine” procedures and dupe them into xenophobia. The evidence is all on Google News (though you might have to search for May Day immigration rallies) if you’re still mystified by establishment notions of newsworthiness.

(I won’t address the alternate meaning of that sentence, which is that our country consists of foreign nationals who pose a threat to our health.)

Unfortunately this bullshit circus sideshow of political hobbyists is still considered relevant, and they are still representing the name “libertarian” in every major election. This is a problem. The Alliance of the Libertarian Left should no longer be considered a competing brand of libertarianism, but is the one nationwide program actually pushing the libertarian project of liberty for all – not just those who are allowed past a fortified barrier built by criminal enterprises.

I am very disappointed about the time and other resources I spent in collaboration with the organization that produced this monstrosity. Real libertarians, give up on the LP! They can do little harm if you do not help them.

No more bullshit – only onwards to victory.

May Day Madness

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Here’s some material to help you celebrate May Day the dork way: by sitting at your computer and reading stuff:

Rad Geek lays down the history of May Day:

Today is May Day, or International Worker’s Day: a day to celebrate the long, hard struggle of workers for freedom, self-determination, and a better life. The day originated during the heady days of the Eight Hour Day campaign in the late 19th century, a campaign led not by bureaucratic union bosses, much less by Marxist thugs, but by ordinary workers agitating and organizing amongst themselves. Most of them were anarchists, and their struggle was as much against State power as it was against the bosses (part of the reason for May Day commemorations, mind you, is to remember the Haymarket martyrs, anarchists murdered by the state of Illinois).

Back in 1888, Benjamin Tucker described the differences and similarities between state socialism and anarchism.

Yesterday, Brad Spangler presented an interesting look at the historic and current relation of market anarchism to socialism and the left.
