I used to like both, but when we moved out in the sticks (and could receive only two FM stations) I lost track of current music. It seemed awful to me at first, but it turned out to be timed pretty well.

One of my stepsons played Metallica's new release for me. He really likes it, but only two songs caught my attention, and I can't even remember their titles now. In truth, though, their hopping into bed with the RIAA means I'll never support them again.

I think I read in an interview that he Jesused up when he was recovering from a major arm injury. The Megadeth wikipedia page mentions his conversion.

In Metallica's defense, it's probably hard to stay cool when you get that big and have a legion of corporate types between you and the public.

Wow. When did Dave do that? Last time I saw him he still came off as more of a political leftist rather than a god botherer.

Metallica stopped being cool a little while after Metallica V came out, IMO. Cutting their hair and releasing Load (of Alternative(tm) crap) was just proof of it. I still remember the first moment when I began to suspect something was going to go horribly wrong -- a friend of mine went to their concert and came back telling of how Hetfield dropped the mike and jumped behind the drums to play for a minute, when suddenly the guy behind my friend shouted "Aww! Homey's FRESH!"
After that, their ego inflation, RIAA whoring, and crapping on their older fans just confirmed my fears.

I never really felt that way about Megadeth, though. It didn't feel like they'd jumped the proverbial shark so much as just hit a rough patch and released a number of crappy albums. By contrast I do like Cryptic Writings, and The System Has Failed has some good tracks -- Scorpion, for one.
But yeah, I'd not heard about Megadave's discovering the whereabouts of Jeebus. That's just sad. Like when Alice Cooper started playing golf.

I don't think that either of them suck, just that they aren't really cool anymore. Albumwise, I'd say Youthanasia and Load began the cool decline. Metallica attacking illegal downloading and Mustaine being a born-again Christian who won't play earlier Megadeth songs that offend him signal losses of coolness.

So in your opinion in their discography where does the "suck" begin for Metallica and Megadeth respectively?

Dave Mustaine is still pretty awesome. It's a shame about Metallica, though.
Personally, I choose to believe they all were killed in the early 90s and replaced by clones, grown in the basement from giant seed pods planted by record executives. That's why they suddenly appeared in public with short hair: the evil, corporate apologist clones hadn't had time to grow it out yet.
Some say I'm crazy, but I know what I've imagined with my own two eyes! Lol.

I wonder if we could generate power by wiring up some coils around Cliff Burton's coffin, to harness the energy from his spinning.
